Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane returned to north London to score his typical goal against Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final encounter, which finished 2-2 on Tuesday.
The former Tottenham Hotspur star, who is typically Arsenal’s nemesis in north London derbies, scored a penalty in the 32nd minute as the Bundesliga team rallied from behind to lead 2-1.
Arsenal, playing in their first Champions League quarterfinal in 14 years, took an early lead thanks to a brilliant Bukayo Saka goal. Arsenal were surprised when former striker Serge Gnabry leveled six minutes later, and Kane scored his 39th goal of the season in all competitions after Leroy Sane was fouled in the area.
Arsenal will go to Bavaria for the second leg next week full of optimism, as substitute Leandro Trossard leveled in the 76th minute to keep the tie alive.
On Tuesday night, ISAAN KHAN from Mail Sport assessed the players.
ARSENAL: David Raya: 5.5.
After sprinting out of his area, he was caught off guard for Bayern’s first goal. A terrible choice. That had a knock-on effect on him.
Ben White: 6.5.
A well-weighted ball set up Bukayo Saka’s score. He should have scored after 16 minutes with a terrific one-on-one opportunity against Manuel Neuer, but instead made a crucial interception on 35 minutes.
William Saliba: 5.5
In the first half, he committed four fouls and conceded a penalty. He is far more capable than this show.
Gabriel: 5.5.
Not up to his typical standards. His inaccurate pass set up Bayern’s opening goal. Shook off Harry Kane’s elbow to the neck in the second half.
Jakub Kiwior: 5.5
Leroy Sane caused him a lot of difficulty down the left side. Substituted at halftime.
Martin Odegaard: 6.5.
Controlled most of Arsenal’s play throughout the first half, including the move that resulted to the first goal. Although his impact was restricted during the second phase.
JORGINHO: 6.
Started well but was swamped later in the contest.
DECLAN RICE (6.5)
Was everywhere in midfield in an enthusiastic performance. But I couldn’t grab the game by the scruff of its neck.
Bukayo Saka: 8
Well taken goal. We also cut some creative shortcuts. He often seemed to be threatening.
Kai Havertz: 6.5.
Set up White with a wonderful opportunity after 16 minutes. I could’ve been more active at times.
Gabriel Martinelli: 7.
When he had the ball in space, he was like a livewire. One of the Gunners’ major threats. However, I should have gotten more of it.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: 7.5.
His Champions League expertise showed through. He boosted his team’s motivation.
Gabriel Jesus: 7.
Assisted Leandro Trossard. A solid cameo.
LEANDRO TROSSARD: 7.5.
Clinically made use of his opportunity to score. What an important objective.
