Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane returned to north London and continued his tradition of scoring against Arsenal, netting a goal as the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie concluded in a 2-2 draw on Tuesday.
The ex-Tottenham Hotspur player, often a thorn in Arsenal’s side during north London derbies, calmly converted a penalty in the 32nd minute to put his Bundesliga side ahead after they had fallen behind 1-0.
Despite Premier League leaders Arsenal taking an early lead with a clinical Bukayo Saka strike, they were left stunned as former player Serge Gnabry equalized six minutes later. Kane then added to Arsenal’s woes by scoring his 39th goal of the season in all competitions, capitalizing on a foul on Leroy Sane in the box.
Arsenal will travel to Bavaria for the second leg next week with renewed hope, especially after substitute Leandro Trossard scored the equalizer in the 76th minute, leaving the tie delicately poised.
ISAAN KHAN of Mail Sport provided player ratings for Tuesday night’s match.
DAVID RAYA: 5.5
Was left in no man’s land for Bayern’s opening goal after rushing out of his area. A poor decision. That had a knock-on effect on his side.
BEN WHITE: 6.5
Provided a well-weighted pass for Bukayo Saka’s goal and had a great opportunity to score after 16 minutes with a one-on-one chance against Manuel Neuer, but failed to convert. Made a crucial interception on 35 minutes.
WILLIAM SALIBA: 5.5
Committed four fouls in the first half and gave away a penalty. He is much better than this display.
GABRIEL: 5.5
Below his usual standards, as his errant pass led to Bayern’s opportunity for the first goal. Additionally, endured an elbow to the neck by Harry Kane in the second half.
JAKUB KIWIOR: 5.5
Leroy Sane gave him a world of trouble down that left flank. Substituted at half-time.
MARTIN ODEGAARD: 6.5
Controlled much of Arsenal’s play in first half, and started the move for the opening goal. Though his influence was stifled in second period.
JORGINHO: 6
Started strongly but began to be overrun later in the match.
DECLAN RICE: 6.5
Was everywhere in midfield in an energetic display. But couldn’t grab the game by the scruff of its neck.
BUKAYO SAKA: 8
Well-taken goal. Took some clever corners, too. Often looked a threat.
KAI HAVERTZ: 6.5
Set-up White with a great chance after 16 minutes. Could have been more active at times.
GABRIEL MARTINELLI: 7
A dynamic presence whenever he possessed the ball in open field, he emerged as one of the primary dangers for the Gunners. However, he ought to have been supplied with the ball more frequently.
SUBSTITUTES:
OLEKSANDR ZINCHENKO: 7.5
His Champions League experience came through. Added impetus to his team.
GABRIEL JESUS: 7
Provided an assist for Leandro Trossard. A solid cameo.
LEANDRO TROSSARD: 7.5
Clinically took his chance to score. What a crucial goal.
