After his club tied 3-3 with Manchester City on Tuesday, Real Madrid star Rodrygo declared that “whoever errs least will pass” through to the Champions League semifinals.
The two European titans faced off in the quarterfinals this time, following back-to-back meetings in their previous four encounters, and they played a historic first leg at the Bernabeu.
Within three minutes, Bernardo Silva had sneaked the visitors ahead before Rodrygo gave Los Blancos a 2-1 lead.
And while Josko Gvardiol and Phil Foden rained spectacular long-range strikes into Andriy Lunin’s upper corner, Fede Valverde made sure that everything was even heading into a tҺrilling penalty shootout at the Etihad in just over a week.
Rodrygo stated that his team “wаnted to win” and “come out with a positive result” when asked about his thoughts on the game after it had concluded.
“We did draw, but it’s all good. We made some оffensive mistakes and gave up goals that we shouldn’t have. We have a week to work and a game to break it up. “Let’s return for more,” he insisted.
However, Rodrygo acknowledged that Madrid rallied after City had twice taken the lead.
“It’s always difficult to get over a 1-0 deficit so early, but yes, we came back,” he said.
“After that, we had a little bit more control over everything. After we recovered, we realized we could launch counterattacks and cause harm.”
According to Rodrygo, “there’s not much left to sаy” and “nothing can be done anymore” because he and his teammates realize they should have closed down their opponents more quickly at long range. He emphasized, “We have to fix it and move on next week.”
Rodrygo once again switched to the left side for stretches of play while Vinicius Jr. moved centrally. Nine days prior, he had used the position to great advantage in a 2-0 La Liga victory against Athletic Club, scoring both goals.
Since Vini is always there, they weren’t expecting it, but today we approached it differently by using a fresh strategy. Even though the outcome wasn’t what we had hoped for, everything went quite well,” Rodrygo remarked.
When asked what the keys to victory for either team on April 17 would be, Rodrygo gave his prediction, saying that “whoever errs the least” would face the winner of Bayern Munich vs. Arsenal to advance to the Wembley Cup.
