After losing to Aston Villa 2-0, Mikel Arteta’s team missed their chance to move two points clear of Manchester City atop the Premier League standings, suggesting that this weekend could have been crucial in the race for the championship.
In the 83rd minute of the game, Lucas Digne’s thunderous cross went straight across the goal’s face and Arsenal failed to clear it. Leon Bailey then crashed a low shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Three minutes later, Ollie Watkins came back and sealed the win with a spectacular breakaway goal, ducking the ball under David Raya. Youri Tielemans struck the crossbar with a long-range attempt, giving Aston Villa a chance to win early in the second half.
Villa then strengthened their hold on a spot in the Champions League for the following campaign and pulled three points clear of Tottenham in fourth position following Spurs’ crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
DAVID RAYA: 6
In two opportunities, Ollie Watkins and Youri Tielemans both struck the goalframe. Not helped this time by his defense.
Ben White: 6.5
After 21 minutes, excellent defense stave off a counterattack by Watkins.
5.5 WILLIAM SALIBA
The midfield player scored after Leon Bailey was set loose at the backpost. For the second goal, there was some questionable positioning. Will be deeply let down.
Gabriel – six
made the error that gave Watkins permission to strike a post.
ZINCHENKO OLEKSANDR – 5.5
Excellent teamwork, however Tielemans’ careless attempt to dribble out of danger left him just centimeters from the goal.
ODEGAARD MARTIN – 8.5
pulled at the midfield strings. got down to business tackling as well. The best player for Arsenal.
RICE DECLAN – 6
Significant off the ball due to his movements and positioning, and proficient at applying pressure. However, greater work on the ball in the offensive third was required.
KAI HAVERTZ – 6
There was some nice movement and some deft backline darting from deep, but there was not enough finishing. This occasionally seriously hurt Arsenal.
SAKA BUKAYO – 6.5
vivacious and a major source of issues during the first period, but waned in the second.
Gabriel Jesus – 6
had two decent chances in the first half that were saved and one that was headed but went wide.
