This is an annual award to honor athletes and teams with breakthrough and outstanding achievements. The award began in 2000. It is one of seven categories at the Laureus World Sports Awards.

This season, Bellingham had a breakthrough in his career. In the recent Super Classic match, the British star was the author of the decisive goal to help Real Madrid defeat Barcelona 3-2.

Another prominent football star included in the nomination list for the Laureus World Sports Award for Male Athlete of the Year is Erling Haaland. However, in this category, tennis legend Novak Djokovic was the winner.
