With Liverpool’s first Merseyside derby loss in three years at Goodison Park, the Premier League title race took a new turn on Wednesday night.
For Everton, goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin increased their chances of surviving in the Premier League. Liverpool’s chances of winning the Premier League title are in risk after suffering their second defeat in their previous three league games.
At the top of the Premier League table, three points behind Arsenal are Jurgen Klopp’s team. If Manchester City wins on Thursday night at Brighton & Hove Albion, they will fall to third.
The fact that Liverpool lost is good news for Mikel Arteta’s team. Following their easy victory against Chelsea on Tuesday, the Gunners have bounced back from their little slip-up earlier in the month to take the lead in the league.
Arsenal will lead the league heading into Sunday’s north London derby, regardless of what transpires at Brighton. The race to be declared English champions is expected to be fierce in the final month of the season. Football.london evaluates the challenging games played by the three championship contenders below.
Tottenham (A) – April 28, Sunday
Arsenal will face yet another challenging match when they go to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. With three points, the Gunners will come a significant step closer to capturing the Premier League crown than they did when their north London rivals held them to a 2-2 draw earlier in the season.
Although it seems more likely that they will finish in fifth place, Ange Postecoglou’s team is still vying for a spot in the UEFA Champions League. But winning for the white side of London will mean more than only stopping Arsenal’s title chances with three points.
Sunday, May 12th: Manchester United (A)
The journey to Manchester United is scheduled for the penultimate weekend of the season, making the games away from the Emirates Stadium even harder. Even though Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils may not be playing at their peak right now, this is always a challenging matchup.
Despite losing their previous two trips to Old Trafford, Arteta’s team will be confident in their ability to win this match.
Everton (H) – May 19, Sunday
Arsenal will host Everton at the Emirates on the last day of the season in a match that might mean a lot for both teams in the standings. The Toffees aren’t mathematically safe just yet, and the title chase is going the distance at this rate.
But Sean Dyche’s team is eight points above the bottom three after defeating Liverpool.
AFC Bournemouth (Home) – May 4, Saturday
After the trip to Tottenham, Arsenal hosts Bournemouth at home to start May. The Cherries have had a respectable season in the top division and are safe from relegation.
With nothing to lose, they will travel to North London, thus the Gunners will be hoping to pick up three points.
