3 Premier League clubs that could sign Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale never would have predicted Arsenal’s summer acquisition of David Raya.

The England international has had a passable, albeit unspectacular, 2022–2023 season. Although Ramsdale had some noticeable shortcomings that needed to be fixed, very few believed that an upgrade at goalie was necessary before the 2023–2024 season.

Sadly for Rambo, Mikel Arteta was one of those really rare people.

Consequently, David Raya was snapped up by Arsenal, and the Spaniard soon replaced Ramsdale as the team’s top player, causing some early discomfort and a protracted period of awkwardness. The formerly assured Englishman had become a reticent and unsteady shot-stopper on the times when Ramsdale was needed. Raya’s infrequent appearances only served to support Arteta’s ruling, as he went on to win Golden Gloves in May after keeping his 15th clean sheet of the year against Bournemouth.

Ramsdale’s 2023–24 campaign has been disastrous, but a decline in confidence does not make the former fan favorite a “bad” goalie. Although he still has high expectations, it’s highly likely that he will leave in favor of regular starts come summertime. It was believed that following Nick Pope’s shoulder surgery in January, Newcastle would have pursued Ramsdale. Due to an injury, Pope has missed the last few months of play; however, he is back in Eddie Howe’s matchday squad and may return for Euro 2024.
Newcastle has been regarded as the front-runners to sign Ramsdale, even with Pope’s return.

The Arsenal goalkeeper is a significant improvement over Marin Dubravka, Pope’s backup, but Ramsdale will not be joining the Magpies. He may be counting on his countryman suffering a decline after his permanent injury if he wants to maintain his position as the best.

Does he wish to take that chance?Once more, I’m not sure if this would be Ramsdale’s finest career move, but Wolves is one of the teams rumored to be interested in signing the 25-year-old.

Mauricio PochettinoDan Bentley, who has played at the Emirates this season, provides the West Midlanders with little in the way of a consistent backup behind Jose Sa.

Nevertheless, Sa has had a fantastic season, and even with Ramsdale’s talent, it would be extremely difficult to unseat him as Wolves’ top player.

By slowing down the goals allowed minus post-shot predicted goals measure, Sa’s has effectively prevented 5.8 more goals this season than expected, which is the third-highest amount in the Premier League.

Although he is an excellent shot-blocker, Gary O’Neil’s team needs to improve their possession game. Ramsdale’s contemporary profile makes him a potentially appealing choice.

3. Chelsea

Ramsdale would certainly surrender his fan’s favourite status should he opt to switch his London allegiance, but Chelsea absolutely must be considered by the Englishman should they show an interest. There were tenuous links in January, but a move in the winter was never likely.

The Blues, however, are in need of long-term stability at the goalkeeper position.

They currently have two options who shouldn’t be earning regular Premier League starting berths in Dorde Petrovic and Robert Sanchez.Ramsdale has his flaws (sub-par one-v-one, and a bit of a flapper from crosses), but he’s doubtlessly a superior keeper to both. We know that Mauricio Pochettino’s utopian gloveman carries a swagger in possession, and there are few who exude more confidence on that front than Arsenal’s Rambo. There’s scope for the 25-year-old to emerge as Chelsea’s number one for the long haul.
