MU once dominated English football under Sir Alex Ferguson during his 26 years in power, but since the Scottish legend retired 11 years ago, the Red Devils have seriously declined. During this period, MU spent up to 1.4 billion pounds on transfer activities, including 14 contracts worth 50 million pounds or more and a world record of 89 million pounds for Paul Pogba in 2016.
Many other stars joined the team for a lower fee but with great reputations, but in the end, only a few met expectations. Other factors contributed to MU’s poor performance, but the rookies’ failure to perform was a key issue.
Former MU defender Rio Ferdinand is famous for his straightforward comments. Recently he affirmed that only Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were worthy signings in the past decade.
Ferdinand shared on The Sports Agents podcast: “Looking at player recruitment activities, I only remember 3 names that are worthy of expectations. Bruno, Cristiano, and Zlatan. They are rare players that I see playing well. exactly as expected”.
“The rest are disappointing. For some reason, they do not reach the team’s standards. They do not bring value for the money spent. This is a problem that needs to be resolved.”.
MU’s new owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is looking to improve transfer operations by appointing Dan Ashworth as Sporting Director and Jason Wilcox as Technical Director. The youth scouting team has also been strengthened with the arrival of Sam Williams from Ipswich, who will take on the role of chief scout.
