Lazio have opened talks with Manchester United over a £30million swoop for Mason Greenwood

According to an ESPN source, Lazio will compete with Juventus for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.

Lazio and United have begun talks about signing Greenwood, who spent last season on loan with Getafe.

United are hoping to agree on a fee of around £30 million ($38.1 million), though it is likely that it will have to be supplemented with a number of performance-based bonuses.

A year ago, Lazio came close to signing Greenwood on loan before Getafe intervened. According to a source, United would prefer to negotiate a permanent transfer this summer rather than agree to another loan deal.

In addition to Lazio and Juventus, other Serie A clubs, including Napoli, have expressed interest in the 22-year-old. There is also interest from clubs in Spain, Portugal, and Germany.

According to ESPN, Greenwood and his family are considering another move abroad as he works to rebuild his career. The striker has not played for United since January 2022, when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and assault. The case was closed in February 2023.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, New United’s co-owner, suggested in February that the door was open for Greenwood to restart his career at Old Trafford, but while nothing has been ruled out, a source has told ESPN that a return to United is unlikely this summer.
