Al-Nassr ‘want to make Virgil van Dijk the highest-paid defender in the world and have held talks with his camp’, as Saudi side look to unite Liverpool captain with Cristiano Ronaldo

Al-Nassr are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and intend to make the Dutchman the world’s highest-paid defender.

The centre back turns 33 next month, and his £220,000-per-week contract expires next summer.

Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best defenders in Premier League history since joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2018.

Liverpool is entering a new era with the departure of Jurgen Klopp and the appointment of new manager Arne Slot.

Van Dijk also admitted earlier this year that he ‘doesn’t know’ what the future holds for him.

Van Dijk's future is uncertain following the departure of longtime manager Jurgen Klopp

Van Dijk’s future is uncertain following the departure of long-time manager Jurgen Klopp.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Al-Nassr has already held talks about a summer transfer, with the general director meeting with Van Dijk’s representatives on Tuesday.

He also presented a contract offer that ‘would make the Dutchman the highest-paid defender in the world’.

Al-Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo intend to significantly strengthen the squad after finishing second in the Saudi Pro League for the second consecutive season.

Van Dijk would form a formidable backline alongside Aymeric Laporte.

Van Dijk has yet to be offered a new contract and discussed the situation after Liverpool’s final game of the season.

Van Dijk added, “My future is not important at the moment.” The only thing I can say now is that if I had to say goodbye, I don’t think I’d keep it dry (and not cry) because that was something I was very surprised about with him (Klopp).

Cristiano Ronaldo’s team is looking to end the dominance of Al-Hilal next season.

‘These fans are something else, and when they say goodbye to you, it will be memorable. I even asked Joel, “How did you manage to keep it dry, pal?” He just wanted to walk through it quickly and stand with us, which I believe he did fairly well.

‘At the moment, I have nothing to say. Nothing has changed, and nothing is on the table now. Nothing has changed in my situation at all.
