Chelsea have reached an agreement with Boca Juniors to sign Aaron Anselmino, but the defender will remain on loan in Argentina for another year.
Chelsea have agreed a deal worth £14.1m, plus £3.1m in add-ons, for the 19-year-old, who has only made 10 appearances for Boca Juniors’ first team. The youngster is a centre-back but can also play as a winger. Chelsea made an offer to Boca last month and the two clubs have been in talks over when Anselmino will move to Stamford Bridge.
According to TyC Sports, Boca are keen for Anselmino to stay and Chelsea have now accepted the Argentine club’s request to loan the defender to Boca until the summer of 2025. According to the same source, Chelsea may pay an additional sum to bring the player to England six months in advance, but the amount has not been disclosed.
Chelsea reach agreement to sign Aaron Anselmino
Anselmino now becomes Chelsea’s fifth summer signing after Tosin Adarabioyo, who joined from Fulham last month on a free transfer, Marc Guiu, who cost £5m from Barcelona, Omari Kellyman, who arrived in a £19m deal from Aston Villa, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who joined in a £30m deal from Leicester City this week.
Anselmino came through the Boca academy and made his first-team debut a year ago, but has been limited by a hamstring problem. Speaking after Anselmino’s debut, then-Boca head coach Jorge Almiron said:
“A young player came in and did very well. He looked like he had 200 games. What he did today is beyond his age. Aaron Anselmino is good technically, quick, good at passing. He has a lot of quality, but he needs time. I see him as a very strong boy, I think he has a bright future.”
